Each Tuesday in August and on Equality Day, August 26th                        
Chill out with our celebrities! Discover the National Woman's Party members who fought for equality in the United States.  During this tour of the NWP collection, see pieces that highlight the efforts of members aviator Amelia Earhart, artist Georgia O’Keefe, and entertainer Mary Pickford. These celebrities joined the ranks of the National Woman’s Party to lobby for the Equal Rights Amendment in the United States.

Sunday, August 20, 2006: Susan B. Anthony House 19th Amendment Festival
Enjoy a community celebration of the ratification of the Susan B. Anthony Amendment giving women the right to vote. This beautiful and historic 19th century neighborhood comes alive with free tours, refreshments, children's games, historic portrayers, music, and more!

Tuesday, August 22, 2006: An Anti-Suffrage Monologue with Barbara Callander
You’d expect men to be against woman’s suffrage, but what woman would not want the right to vote?  You’d be surprised!  Written in 1913 by Marie Jenney Howe, this satirical monologue was used by the suffrage movement in the final years before the 19th Amendment became law in 1920.

Taste of Equality, a program celebrating women’s equality, will bring together a panel of experts to discuss the political status of women around the world and will feature a sample of international foods for an array of regions. Under Secretary of Democracy and Global Affairs, Paula Dobriansky, opens our program with a global snapshot of women’s political participation.

Friday, August 25, 2006: Iron Jawed Angels movie screening and discussion                                                                  
Enjoy this historical interpretation of the fight for the 19th Amendment.  See some of the artifacts that inspired the movie, featuring Academy Award winners Hilary Swank and Anjelica Huston, and talk with staff about the life and work of Alice Paul and the NWP during the suffrage movement and beyond.

Saturday, August 26, 2006:  KIDS’ PROGRAM Equality Day: Kids Activism                                                             
On the anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, this program will focus on taking actions by finding one’s voice and standing up for one’s beliefs.  Kids will learn about the activist tactics and strategies of the historic National Woman’s Party through artifacts.  Kids will be encouraged to take action about a cause they care about by making a protest/cause sign, writing a letter to a decision-maker, or creating an activist chant/rhyme.  Snacks will be provided.

Saturday, August 26, 2006: Woman Suffrage Parade
Come join the National Women’s History Project’s contingent in the Woman Suffrage Parade in Sacramento, CA

  • Dress up as your favorite woman or man in history, or come dressed in white, or just come as yourself.  
  • Would you like to design a float? 
  • Would you like to ride on a float?
  • What do you think of the idea of singing using kazoos as accompaniment? 

The Parade will assemble at 9:30 am at Southside Park (8th & T Sts.) in Sacramento, CA, and will march to the Capitol Steps.  Women’s Rights activists, advocates, and dignitaries will speak to the general theme-- a comparison between the challenges that women faced then and that they face today. The purpose of the parade and program is to celebrate Women s Equality Day in the spectacular way it deserves to be celebrated and to inspire non-voting women to vote.
The parade will recreate as nearly as possible the 1913 Woman Suffrage 1913 featured in Iron-Jawed AngelsLeading the parade will be a herald mounted on a white horse.  Marchers will be dressed in period costumes, some will represent historical women, others in marching units or floats representing the whole stratum of female society still striving for equality and interspersed with musical groups.

In the summer of 1985, Mary Todd Lincoln, the President's widow, resides in an insane asylum, sent there by her only living son. Her progressive friend Myra Birdwell, America's first woman lawyer, arrives to help Mary gain her release by exposing the injustices of her trial. But Myra's motives and Mary's sanity are both up for debate, as they grapple with their past and their perceptions of freedom and womanhood.
